We’re identical twins who happen to live across the street from each other, which made this whole project inevitable. Between the two of us, we’ve always been happiest outdoors, in the garden, or on a walk with our dogs — so pooling what we learn about growing and preserving food just made sense.
Birch and Poplar started as a backyard experiment: how much of our own food could we actually grow and keep? What began as a few raised beds and a box of canning jars turned into a running notebook of what works, what doesn’t, and what we wish someone had told us sooner. That notebook is this site.
On the site you’ll find two kinds of posts: practical gardening tips (what to plant, when, and how to keep it alive) and food preservation guides (canning, fermenting, dehydrating, and everything else that turns a harvest into a stocked pantry). Everything here gets tested at home before it gets written up — no recycled advice, no stock-photo gardens.
